Does anyone KNOW the facts about her demise on the show back in 2001?. Did
the producers decide they wanted Lily Tomlin to step into that role...OR,
was it just a matter of Kathryn Joosten wanting out of the show?

I read a blurb that she herself put the idea about her character's death in
Sorkin's imagination as the two of them caught a smoke outside a function,
and she was casually mentioning she was going out for a pilot audition. He
said he didn't hear much of what she was saying about that, but started to
ponder what they would do if she ever left the show.

That's all I know.

Many media clips (including the "don't take a smoke break with Aaron
Sorkin" story) at

Okay, so from the 'horse's' mouth--Joosten-- it seems that it was neither
her wish nor a favoritism toward Tomlin...just 'a creative decision by the
show's producers'.

thank you John.

That's more or less what Sorkin said in the S2 DVD set commentary.
Joosten's pilot didn't pan out in the end, unfortunately. Well, it
made for a grand "Two Cathedrals" episode.

Yes, but it seems that leaving the show was the best thing for her
career. I've seen her on TV a lot more since she left the show than I
did when she was on it. She's shown up on so many different shows.
She's been a regular visitor to "Joan of Arcadia" playing the part of
God for many times this past season.

Perhaps. Though being a regular cast member on a series--if it got
picked up, that is--would have been preferable to doing the occasional
guest-spots, I would think.

Oh definitely it would have been better if she could have been a
regular member of a show, but my point was she's doing quite well. She
seems to have more air time now then when she was on "The West Wing".
It always surprises me how people like her can come into acting late
in life and do so much better at it than people who may have spent
almost their entire life acting.
