With Obama in the White House, it seems, no one is safe from the charge
of racism.
Not even Obama. On Saturday, the president spoke at a
Congressional Black Caucus Foundation dinner in Washington and, as the
Associated Press reports, he lectured the audience: "Take off your
bedroom slippers. Put on your marching shoes. Shake it off. Stop
complainin'. Stop grumblin'. Stop cryin'. We are going to press on. We
have work to do."
Rep. Maxine Waters was havin' none of it. The AP reports that
"the California Democrat, a member of the Congressional Black Caucus,
says she found the president's language 'a bit curious.' She says
Obama didn't address Hispanics in such a blunt manner and would never
use that language in a speech to a gathering of gays or Jews."
If Waters had said the same thing about a white politician, especially
a Republican one, it would have been universally understood as
an accusation of racism.
So... have we at long last gotten to the point where lunatics like
Waters are even accusing Obama of racism? What must her life be like,
with racists everywhere she looks, hiding behind every corner?
Discussion of race in America has become increasingly laughable
during Obama's presidency. If one consequence of electing the first
black president is that Americans end up taking race less seriously,
that will have been a saving grace of an otherwise grim four years.
